Milia commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead and are often mistaken for whiteheads. Milia are usually harmless and are not a form of acne.
What is Milia?
Milia are tiny, firm cysts filled with keratin, a natural protein found in the skin. They develop just beneath the skin’s surface and usually appear as small white, cream, or skin-colored bumps. Milia are most common around the eyes, eyelids, cheeks, forehead, and nose, but they may appear elsewhere on the face or body.
Unlike whiteheads, milia are not acne and do not form from excess oil, bacteria, or an inflamed clogged pore. They usually have no visible opening, which is why they cannot be easily squeezed out. The bumps are generally painless, noncontagious, and harmless, although they may create uneven-looking texture.
There are two main types:
Primary milia form naturally when keratin becomes trapped beneath otherwise healthy skin. These are common in both children and adults.
Secondary milia may appear as the skin heals following irritation, blistering, burns, rashes, injuries, or certain resurfacing procedures
What causes Milia?
Milia form when keratin and dead skin cells become trapped beneath the skin’s surface instead of shedding naturally. The trapped material creates small, firm white or skin-colored cysts, often around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead. Milia are not acne and are not caused by dirt or bacteria.
Common contributing factors include:
- Slow or incomplete skin-cell shedding
- Skin healing after burns, rashes, blisters, or other injuries
- Sun damage that makes the skin thicker and less able to release trapped keratin
- Heavy or occlusive creams, especially around the eyes
- Irritation from aggressive exfoliation or skincare treatments
Milia are usually harmless, but squeezing them at home can damage the skin and increase the risk of irritation or scarring.
How to Treat milia!
Milia are harmless and may sometimes disappear naturally, but persistent bumps can be treated with gentle exfoliation and professional removal. Because milia sit beneath the skin and usually have no open pore, they should not be squeezed like pimples.
At Guidance to Glow in Glendale, treatment may include:
- Professional skin analysis to confirm the bumps appear consistent with milia
- Gentle enzyme exfoliation to remove surface buildup and support normal skin renewal
- Customized facial treatments to smooth texture and reduce future keratin buildup
- Professional milia extraction, when appropriate and within the provider’s scope, using sterile techniques
- Personalized skincare guidance to avoid heavy or overly occlusive products that may contribute to buildup
Milia located very close to the eyelids, or bumps that are changing, painful, inflamed, or difficult to identify, should be evaluated by a qualified medical professional. Avoid picking or attempting removal at home because this can cause irritation, discoloration, infection, or scarring.
